In the mid 1940's, Murphy moved to Los Angeles, where he met Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes. It was here that he attended the Church of the Healing Christ, which was also part of the Church of Divine Science. He moved to New York and began working as a pharmacist, having a degree in Chemistry at the time. In his twenties, Murphy had an profound personal experience with healing prayer which led him to leave the Jesuits and move to the United States. Early in hsi life, he studied for the priesthood and joined the Jesuits. Murphy was born in Ireland he was the son of a private boy's school headmaster and was raised a Roman Catholic. He was also a world renowned authority on mysticism and mind dynamics. Joseph Murphy was an Irish born, naturalised American author, and New Thought minister, ordained in Divine Science and Religious Science.
